Well it’s frustrating (and embarrassing) for the staff as well. The same is true in any business in which the staff can’t easily communicate, at least on a basic level, with customers, or each other.

In a bank, it would be financial terms.  Or it can be hospitality, construction, education, etc. And, because students work one-on-one with a native speaker, the phrase “How do you say … “ is used a lot.
