5 Ways The ShareLingo Project is better than any other Language Learning Program

We are not afraid: Our students know that they need to practice and practice and are not afraid to do so even when the words they are trying to say are hard. Talk about the difference between cheap, ship, and sheep. For native English Speakers the difference in sound is easy to identify, however to Spanish Speakers all three words sounds exactly the same. Ask a person from Chihuahua to say these words and you see what I mean.

Ship

We break barriers: Our mission is to unite communities; Anglos and Latinos learn from each other. This not only helps with self-esteem and confidence, but it also creates a better and healthier community. Happy citizens = Better state = Colorado an amazing place to live!

Flags

We go beyond grammar and vocabulary: We know that grammar is important, but so is losing the fear of speaking in a different language. We provide a safe and friendly environment where the students practice conversation and pronunciation with native speakers. Here they learn the appropriate sounds without getting rid of their accents, after all that’s what makes us unique!

Class

We sing our hearts out on the last day of class: Our students know that singing cures the soul, and also helps with learning. On our last day of class, we have a karaoke session and practice our target language while singing popular songs. It’s so much fun!

Dancing

We are a friendly and supportive community: After spending ten weeks together, it is hard no to become friends with the people who help you with your Spanish. We learn so much from one another, students even get invited to quinceañeras, eat tamales, and really get to immerse in the Latino culture. We all become friends!
Todos

It is said that the best way to learn is by teaching and that’s exactly what our students do!

YMCA y ShareLingo Conectan Comunidades

ShareLingo and YMCA Connecting Communities

Martha is a student at The ShareLingo Project English/Spanish class at YMCA’s Community Programs Branch.

During a recent class, James Archer, our founder, mentioned that he was going to Cancún on vacation. When Martha heard this she enthusiastically said, “My son lives there.”

James asked Martha if she would like him to take something to her son, and although Martha did not want to impose, once James restated that he was serious, she pleasantly accepted the offer. Martha had tears in her eyes when she delivered a small gift for her son to James at the ShareLingo office.

Two weeks ago, James had the opportunity to meet Martha’s son, Javier, in Cancún while delivering the gift his mom sent. They shared a great meal and conversation together.

Martha and her son Javier haven’t been able to see each other for over 10 years. It was very special for James to be able to deliver messages of love and small presents that mother and son sent each other.

Like Martha, there are many other students who are separated and far away from their families.

ShareLingo and the YMCA share a mission to connect cultures. So, in spite of the distance, why not connect families also?

Usually these type of deliveries are made among Latinos, but today, it was an American’s turn to bring these messages of love. This experience reinforces the idea that it is the connection that matters and demonstrates that knowing a different language helps to enrich traditions.

We are grateful Martha opened up her heart and family to us. If you would like to learn Spanish and experience something so special like this, contact us! Stop staring at a computer and come practice Spanish with real people.
